Feature & Follow Friday #5

Happy Friday! Feature & Follow Friday is a weekly event/hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to find new blogs and make new friends.  :)

This weeks Question:
Tell us about the most emotional scene you've ever read in a book - and how did you react?

I refuse to give spoilers here since there are people who have not read this series (shocking, right?), but some of the most emotional scenes I've ever read were in Harry Potter books. One was a certain point in Half-Blood Prince where I cried. Sobbed, honestly. And there are several spots in Deathly Hallows that had me in tears, too. It's possible tears were shed in every single book, now that I think about it.

Hop along and see if you can find some new blogs to follow!  :)

Review & Character Interview - Succubus Rising by B.R. Kingsolver

You can read my review of The Succubus Gift  HERE!

The Goddess has plans for Brenna and Rebecca, and the Goddess has a wicked sense of humor.

Rebecca Healy is a true wilder, growing up with no contact or knowledge of other telepaths. Discovered by a Clan member on the streets of San Francisco, she felt like she’d hit the jackpot. Finally, she knew what she was, or at least she thought she did.

When Brenna O’Donnell, long-lost heir of the O’Donnell Clan, and the strongest telepath in history, is returned to her family, she and Rebecca form a tight bond. Brenna has it all, looks, money, power, and men falling all over her.

Rebecca isn’t jealous, but it would be nice to find someone who would really love her and stick around in the morning. She’s intrigued by a handsome South American general, but of course, he has his sights set on Brenna. Carlos de Vargas wants more than love. His Clan has its back to the wall, and they hope for an alliance with O’Donnell. An alliance that would lead to war.

The story began in The Succubus Gift and continued in Succubus Unleashed. In Succubus Rising, questions are answered and new mysteries are revealed.

"I need a drink."
"It's not even noon yet."
"Oh goody, still time in the day for things to really go to hell."
"I couldn't do it. Either I'd end up killing the lot of them or subjugating them and declaring myself queen. I guess I'm not subtle or patient enough for that sort of role."
With a slight smile, Moira nodded. "But you will try it. Curiosity will drive you crazy."
"No, curiosity will drive you crazy. I'm already nuts."
"She's one of the most dangerous women alive. You and Collin have chosen to ride the tiger. Don't ever let go. But if you treat her as the treasure she is, she'll bring you more joy than you or any man deserves."
"Minor renovations?" Seamus asked incredulously. "A four-foot hole in the floor is a minor renovation?"
"You never saw such a bunch of prima donnas in your life. And of course I have to be diplomatic, instead of strangling them for thinking their bizarre requests are perfectly reasonable."

All your favorites are back - and better than ever in Succubus Rising, the third book in the Telepathic Clans Saga!

Succubus Rising  continues the tales of Brenna, Rebecca, Collin and the rest of the family. We even get to meet some new friends. While all the characters you've come to know over the last two books are present, Brenna isn't the focus in this one - Rebecca is.

We learn lots of new stuff about Rebecca, and I enjoyed her growth in Succubus Rising. Rebecca was already a strong, important character in the Telepathic Clans Saga, but she really comes into her own in this installment. I loved it! I won't give anything away, but it was enjoyable to see what becomes of Rebecca. :)

I tend to worry when I get further into a series that the shine might wear off after a couple books. I shouldn't have worried with this one. B.R. Kingsolver's tale continues to captivate. The writing is still tightly paced, making this another fantastic page-turner. If you haven't read this series, I highly recommend you add TheSuccubus Gift to your TBR as soon as possible!

Rebecca Healy is with us today.

Phantasmic Reads: What is the name of the book where we'll find you? Can you tell us a little about it?

Rebecca: (Smiling, with a flip of her hair) I'm in all of BR Kingsolver's books, The Succubus Gift, Succubus Unleashed, and Succubus Rising. I'm very popular. I'm the sidekick to Brenna O'Donnell, the richest, most beautiful telepath/succubus in the world. I'm her bodyguard and best friend.

The Succubus Gift is about a young woman's (Brenna) coming of age and discovering her telepathic powers. She's looking for love but also trying to deal with people who want to kill her. Succubus Unleashed is a continuation of the story. As Brenna becomes comfortable with being a succubus and integrates into the Clan, her adventures and loves make up the story. In the third book, Succubus Rising, she fully embraces being a succubus and moves to Washington to play with the politicians. Things take a turn, however, when the O'Donnell Clan is asked to support a South American Clan against our main enemy Clans in Europe. The result is a war among telepaths.

There's a silver lining, though. I meet a really dreamy South American general.

Phantasmic Reads: Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you fit into the story? What should we know about you?

Rebecca: Well, as I said, I'm Brenna's bodyguard, friend and confidant. I'm 24 in the first book, turn 25 in the second, and 26 in the third. I'm a powerful telepath in my own right, with 15 telepathic Gifts. I'm tall and slender with brown hair and amber eyes. I have a bachelor's degree in history and a master's in library science. I'm also trained as a Protector. That's the O'Donnell Clan's military/security force. I'm the one who keeps Brenna's head on straight and keeps her from getting too full of herself. She has a tendency to pay too much attention to people who tell her she's wonderful.

Phantasmic Reads: What do you think of the author? Be honest. We won't tell.

Rebecca: You're trying to get me in trouble, aren't you? Let me just say that BR has an incredibly detailed imagination. A little dull in real life, though. Not the sort of person to be the life of the party. But if I ever retire and open a bookstore, that's who I'd want for a business partner.

Phantasmic Reads: How do you feel about the story you're in?

Rebecca: I think it's a pretty good story. It's not a standard run-of-the-mill paranormal fantasy. It has a lot of unique ideas and BR lets the characters develop. I think the series originally was meant to be rather light-hearted, but it's taken on a darker side. I think it has most of what you'd want in a story - humor, romance, danger, and the good guys win. It's not Anna Karenina, but it's better than being in something where all the women are doormats.

Phantasmic Reads: Do you like being a character in the book?

Rebecca: After being imprisoned in BR's mind for months, it's great to get out and meet the world. (Smiles) I do get to do a lot of exciting things, and I get to have a lot of sex, which is kind of nice. I wish people would stop trying to kill me and Brenna, though. What happened to romances where the heroine's greatest fear was having a hair out of place?

Phantasmic Reads: How do you see your future? Without giving anything away about the story, naturally.

Rebecca: As I said earlier, I'm going to be in a number of books. I've always hoped to find someone to love me. Other than Brenna, I mean. I love her to death, but I don't really swing that way. Tall, dark and handsome in my bed every night would be nice. It's a bit difficult when every man in the world is looking at your best friend, but maybe I can pick one of her rejects.

One of these days, I'd like to be the star in a book. Isn't that every character's dream? Right now, BR seems fixated on succubi, and I'm not a succubus. But if I keep getting mentioned in reviews, maybe I'll get a shot.

Phantasmic Reads: What do you know about your author's plans? Can we expect to see you in any future stories?

Rebecca: I have a much larger role in the third book in the Telepathic Clans Saga, and a minor role in a paranormal mystery/thriller yet to be named. BR says the 4th book about Brenna will come out in 2013, but I haven't seen the outline for that one. I assume it will tie up all the loose ends from the first three books, and since it's about Brenna, I'll be there. We can't let the girl out by herself. Who knows what she'd do?

Phantasmic Reads: Let's say they make a movie about this book. Who do you want to play you, and why?

Rebecca: Wow, that's a hard one. I'm not the busty Hollywood type with perfect hair. It would have to be someone athletic. Someone like Jennifer Garner, but she's way too old, now. There's a young British actress who's done mostly stage work named Annie Hemingway. She's not very well known, but I saw her in a play in New York and she was wonderful.

I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school and I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I’d like to see Banff in Canada.

I have a very significant other, two cats and two Basset Hounds. I’m currently living in Baltimore, nine blocks from the harbor, but still own a home in New Mexico that I see too infrequently.

[Blog Tour] Review & Giveaway - Devour by Megan Duncan

You never know how strong you are until something makes you choose between humanity, and the beast.

As Claire descended deep into the ancient tomb; laying to rest the bodies of the fallen, she wondered if time healed all wounds, would an eternity be long enough? Still recovering from a brutal attack that nearly killed her, she refused to let evil win. Pain and destruction glared at her everywhere she went. Nothing and no one would ever be safe until Baal was not only defeated, but destroyed. Fueled by her thirst for revenge, she traveled with her father to the ‘old world’, seeking the aide of a long forgotten ally. Will their quest for help lead to their salvation, or is it only the first step in their annihilation?

Who wouldn't want to live in such a gorgeous palace and become the daughter of a king and queen?
This place I had never known felt more like home in that moment then in any other place I had ever been.
Darkness swallowed the room, and I snuggled back into my covers, ready to revisit the world of slumber. However, the tickets had apparently sold out.
After reading the entire Warm Delicacy trilogy, a review specific to Devour  would be a challenge. This will be more of an overall review of all three books. I should have written reviews in between each book, but as soon as I finished one, I started the next. Right there is a sign of a very good series!

Devour  is the finale in the series that begins with Savor  and continues in Indulge. Claire has been very busy throughout the books, and even though she's barely eighteen, she handles most everything very well. I'd say even better than a lot of adults would. :)

Savor,  Indulge, and Devour  are all well-written, and Megan Duncan does a wonderful job showing readers exactly what Claire's world is like. The descriptions and details are perfectly balanced - not too little, not too much.

We meet many new people along the journey - friends, family, and enemies. Every character is richly developed with their own voices and personalities. From Claire herself to Ione, Bennett, and Arrick, every single character has a story of their own, and we learn about them all through Claire's eyes.

Megan Duncan has a fantastic way of weaving a story. Devour  sees a resolution to the conflict that has plagued Claire and company, and there is nothing disappointing about the journey. For lovers of both YA/NA and/or vampires, I highly recommend this wonderful series. Start with Savor - and fall in love with Claire and an amazing cast of characters!

[Book Blitz] State of Emergency by Summer Lane

What would you do if the world as you know it ended in an instant?
How far would you go to survive?

Cassidy Hart is your typical High School graduate: A little shy, a little sarcastic, and a little naive. But when an electromagnetic pulse takes down the United States, she's forced to kick into full survival mode when she gets separated from her father.
Yeah. Things suck.
But with the help of a handsome soldier named Chris, she just might find her dad without getting into serious trouble.
Emphasis on might.
Oh. And there's the matter of avoiding getting killed in a world that's quickly turned into an active war zone.
It's going to change Cassidy's life.
It's going to be a major pain in the butt.
State of Emergency  on Amazon | B&N | Goodreads

Excerpt {Prologue}
I don’t know how it happened. Nobody does. There are only theories, empty rhetoric and doomsday prophecies. None of them are right, but none of them are completely wrong, either. They all have a grain of truth. All I know is where I was and what I was doing when it happened.

The day had started out like every other day of my life. I hit the snooze button on my alarm about five times before dragging myself out of bed. I combed back my unruly red hair, threw on some clothes, and went into the kitchen. As usual, my dad hadn’t gone to the grocery store, so breakfast consisted of burnt toast and a teaspoon of olive oil.

Because fatty acids are supposed to be healthy for you.

And because there’s nothing else to eat in my house except a can of string beans from 1999.

Being nineteen, graduated from high school and unemployed, I didn’t have much to do besides surf the internet looking for interesting stories and reading my stack of books from the library. Lately I had applied for a multitude of different jobs, including a flight attendant, car washer and hotel manager. Needless to say, none of those positions panned out.

I’m more of the independent type, getting paid by my dad to help him out with his job as a private detective. He’s been letting me poke around in his cases since I was a freshman in high school. I’m good at it, too. Criminal justice, that is. I even wanted a degree in it, but since I’m flat busted broke and stuck in a two-bedroom home with an empty refrigerator, my options are kind of slim.

Anyway, after I looked for a few jobs online, I closed my laptop and started cleaning the house. My dad and I lived in a small house in the outer suburbs of Los Angeles. Culver City, to be exact. It’s about ten minutes away from Hollywood. The land of spray-on tans and yoga classes.

It’s a nice place to live as long as you don’t drive about five miles in the opposite direction. In that case you’ll end up in the middle of a ghetto. A visit to the grocery store might end up becoming a drive-by shooting.

Unsurprisingly, I’m an introvert.

So that day, that regular, average day, turned out to be a day that not only changed my life – but everybody else’s.

It was the day technology turned on us.

It was the beginning of a major pain in the butt.

As soon as Hailey Parrish discovered her husband was cheating with her co-worker, she swore off men. She had to find another job when her boss went to prison for being a pimp in his spare time. Three years later, Hailey still hadn’t gone on a date and she milks chinchilla for a living. Her life is about to get weirder.
While in pursuit of inter-dimensional miscreants who use their arcane powers to prey upon humans, Sebastian Kess was ambushed and mortally wounded. To save his life, he used his own magic to convert his soul to binary code and transfer it into Hailey’s soon-to-be shipped Kindle eBook reader. When Hailey inadvertently releases him and he inhabits her body, she finally has a man inside her, just not in the way she imagined.

Hailey must come to grips with the existence of the parallel dimension of Coursodon and the realization that magically inclined non-humans walk the world while dealing with Sebastian’s arrogant banter in her head.  Her predicament also introduces her to another supernatural, the handsome could-be-the-man-of-her-dreams Alex Sunderland.  The action moves from Hailey’s hometown of Tucson, Arizona to New England and across Europe as she and Alex try to return Sebastian to his own body while staying one step ahead of the criminals who want to keep him where he is.

Special Offers, the first book of the Coursodon Dimension Series, combines paranormal romance, urban fantasy, a bit of science fiction and a healthy dose of quirky humor.

There's something very disconcerting about waking up before the sun comes up. Seriously, if god had wanted us to get up when it was still dark out, he wouldn't have given us eyelids.
"I don't know how you can stand to drink it black," she countered. "Besides, it's like having coffee and a doughnut all in one without the extra fat. It's really a very sensible diet strategy."
I woke up thinking I must be making progress. Usually in my dreams I ran them over after I set them on fire.
My eyes grew wide with recognition. "You're the assho - uh, guy from the phone?" I quickly corrected.
"Yes. I'm the asshole."
This was awkward.
I could imagine the conversation at work on Monday. "What did you do over the weekend, Hailey?" "Not much, I was taken over by a man in my Kindle."
"Let me get this straight," he began finally. "You've accepted that you are essentially possessed by a supernatural being who trapped himself in your Kindle to avoid destruction by a sociopathic outlaw, but you are questioning if the process is technically feasible?"

While drinking her morning coffee before work one day, Hailey Parrish realizes that she has way too many books. When she checks her email, there's one from Amazon, touting their latest Kindle - with special offers - for $79. One click and one day shipping later, Hailey is the proud owner of more than she bargained for.

Sebastian Kess is an enforcer of sorts from a parallel dimension. While on a mission, Sebastian ran into some trouble, and his essence ended up in what would soon be Hailey's Kindle. When she turns her Kindle on, Sebastian moves out of the Kindle and into Hailey. Let the fun begin!

Strange things start to happen to Hailey, and she feels like she's losing her mind. Enter Alex Sunderland, the oh-so-handsome and sexy man who just might be the one to break her three-year dateless streak. After an interesting evening at the bar, Hailey is pretty sure she's ready for a mental hospital. Alex follows her home and tries to explain the situation to Hailey.

Alex and Hailey work on finding out where Sebastian's body is so they can get him out of Hailey. Taking an impromptu vacation from her chinchilla-milking job, she jets off with Alex on a quest to make Sebastian whole again.

Hailey copes pretty well with all the things she learns about Sebastian, Alex, the parallel dimension, and magic. She doesn't flip out, and gets some sweet revenge on Sebastian a few times. And I will never look at chopsticks the same way again.

Some fun things to watch out for in Special Offers  are the shower scene (why is it always a shower?), the great coffee debate (black or not?), her new-found love (HA!) of scotch, and of course, the interaction between Sebastian and Hailey.  Also, she doesn't put in too many appearances, but Hailey's mother is entertaining, too. I love her ring tone!

Special Offers is delightful read with action, adventure, romance and magic. With the cliffhanger ending, I'm very glad that the second book in the series, Special Rewards, is already out. That way, I don't have to wait too long to find out what happens next!
