Spotlight & Giveaway - Rising Calm by Haley Fisher

Haley-Fisher-Long

Rising Calm
by Haley Fisher
About The Author:
I'm Haley Fisher, a college student in Kansas, and I've just signed a contract with a company called Silver Tongue Press  to publish my first book!

For as long as I can remember I've been an avid reader and an aspiring writer, but the step toward actually getting a book published is an enormous one for me. This is a big deal. And, as I've been told, the next step to being successful is getting the word out that my book exists.

So, though it's not in print yet—it's coming out February 14th—I'd love for people to keep an eye out for Rising Calm.  It'll be the first in a series of books about a young girl who finds out her life and her fate are far bigger than  she ever realized. At the risk of giving too much away, the most I can tell you for now is that there is magic, prophecy, new worlds, and a cast of characters who I love to write.

I'll keep this updated as Rising Calm  gets farther and farther along on the path to being published. Until then, I don't have much else to say but thanks for reading!

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Publisher: Silver Tongue Press
Release Date: February 14, 2013
Book Description:

On Cara Weaver’s first day at her new high school—merely the next in a long line of new schools—she meets two senior boys: James Sable and Crispin Calaway. They’re new too; they’ve been at the school just longer than she has, and they’ve never made an effort to reach out to anyone. Until she comes. When her friends find out, they’re awed. But Cara can't shake the feeling that there’s more to James and Crispin than the two are telling.

As the days go on, everything at her new home seems to be going better than it has in any of the previous cities she’s lived in. She loves her friends, gets a job at a bookstore, and even starts to spend more time with Crispin and James. She’s happy. But all that begins to change when she comes to realize that the two boys she’s becoming close to are hiding something. It’s then that she knows her unexplainable wariness of them has been justified all along. But she keeps it a secret.

Days later, when a stranger accosts her outside a small shopping center, Crispin and James arrive just in time to help her. But they seem know the attacker. And instead of running him off, Crispin and James take Cara away, for her own protection.

With little explanation, Cara is told that she’s important and that she can’t go home until the boys have sorted some things out. In the meantime, Cara’s world is being turned upside down as she finds out that there is more to her life than she possibly imagined.

Book Genre Religious Fiction/ YA (13+ or 7th grade)Publisher Westbow Press, Inc A Thomas Nelson DivisionRelease Date May 2012

Snow is a fiction novel, based on true events, about the struggles of a teenage girl and the consequences of a devastating mistake. Whether readers are young adults, exploring their sexuality for the first time, or an older adult, struggling to understand their teenage daughter, everyone will have a character in which to relate.

Young adults will be gripped by the reality and bluntness of it's characters. Parents will appreciate the censorship of otherwise “uncomfortable” topics. With sexuality among young adults beginning at an early age, "family values" are now being pushed back into the forefront of parental teaching. Snow influences people with Christian values, such as sexual abstinence, pro-life advocacy, and prayer, without pushing God as the subject of the book. Biblically based information is strategically scattered throughout the novel with dialect and personal thoughts.

The protagonist's quest to discover the path she needs to take unearths findings of a secret life, lead by her boyfriend. With two lives at stake, readers will eagerly anticipate the outcome only to find themselves with lessons and warnings about the consequences of making detrimental mistakes. Comfort will be found in understanding that God is bigger than any situation and He catches ever tear. Miracles so often go unnoticed, yet powerfully affect those they touch. Snow will set the stage for future novels reflective of countless miracles and divine intervention.

Excerpt:

Mrs. Davis grabbed Luke by the arm and pulled him along behind her as she purposefully marched toward the bar. After ordering a Grey Goose martini, she turned around to face Luke.

"You know why I brought you over here," she glared at him, her voice shaking with anger.

"Yeah, I know." Luke sat on the bar stool and folded his arms on the counter.

"What are you going to do about this, Luke?"

"I don't know, Mom. She wants to have it."

"You can't allow that to happen. You know that."

"I can't make her do it." Luke ran his hands through his un-gelled hair. " And her mom! She just won't stop interfering. She had this church lady come over yesterday and talk to Ruth about
having the abortion. That lady managed to change her mind, because, believe it or not, I did have her convinced."

Mrs. Davis sipped her martini and lit a cigarette. "Well, we have to get rid of this one. You can't have two of these things hanging over your head for the next eighteen years."

"I don't know how to convince her." He laughed as he said, "I told her, when we first found out, that I'd hire someone to beat her up and make her miscarry."

Mrs. Davis chuckled, "Or you could just kill her."

"Mother, please."

Mrs. Davis tapped the ashes off her cigarette and motioned for Luke to leave. "Don't worry; I'll take care of this. Tell her to come here."

Luke got off the bar stool and went into the arcade. He should have gone straight to look for Ruth, but part of him didn't want his mom to convince her to have the abortion. He loved how
sweet and obedient Ruth was and didn't want to lose her. His eye caught a military game, so he headed over, ready to release some frustration.

What Readers Are Saying:

"Heart-tugging, heart-warming. beautiful story." ~InsightfulTruth

Notes for Parents:
Reading Level: Young Adults

Read this yourself. You'll gain a great understanding of what your kids are going through at school and socially. Then, give it to your daughter (or son). This novel was written to tell the truth. It's not sugar coated...it's just blunt. The main character, a virgin, looses her virginity to a guy she believes loves her. Over time he has made her feel obligated to prove her love to him. After a one time mistake she finds herself pregnant at 15. Her boyfriend has a checkered past filled with girls that either were pregnant or are pregnant. He and his family pressure her to abort the baby. The novel graphically describes the abortion process and reveals the emotions that overwhelm Ruth. There are many lessons in this book and although it may invoke discussions about premarital sex, abortion, and abuse you will be grateful that your daughter (or son) is receiving a valuable, positive message.Because of the content, I do not recommend this book to anyone under 13 or 7th grade.

Excerpt:
Prelude
The almighty Father stormed into the room as a mighty rushing wind. As His very presence passed by, each servant stood at attention as they lined His pathway. Gabriel followed Him very closely and spoke: “Lord, I don’t understand.”

The Father stopped midway and turned to Gabriel and gave a declaration. “The Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings. You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this. It is warfare, Gabriel. Remember the Law of Moses, My servant, which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. Behold, I will send Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.”

The Father continued toward His seat. He sat in heaven exasperated. He turned and looked at His Son, who was looking down at Earth. “Son, what seems to have your attention?”

“Father, come look at this,” the Son said as He stood gazing down toward Earth at Arthur and Valencia Todd and their daughter, Lindsy Todd.

The Father walked over, joined His Son, and together they looked down at the Todd family.

Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Thriller

Samantha Clark meets with a monthly group to delve into subjects of interest. They dabble in meditation, dream work, and hypnosis — just friends having fun. But lately Sammi is feeling off-kilter and plagued with poor sleep. Searching for a natural solution, she discovers a bitter herb known to induce slumber, whips up a concoction to sweeten the herb, and imbibes. Unbeknownst to her, these areas of experimentation are whirling together to form the perfect storm, one that will blow open an entrance in Sammi’s mind that leads to another world, a door that can never again be closed.

She becomes enmeshed with two friends in a tug of war between life and death: Melissa is dealing with a complicated pregnancy and Julie is wrestling with cancer. Adding to this turmoil is Sammi’s disconnect with her career as a psychotherapist; her life doesn’t seem to fit any longer. Into the drama walks Todd, a handsome, laid-back guy who lightens up her days. Trouble is, Sammi is having a hard time getting close, and a nagging sense of doubt and fear. Like so many times in the past …

But the topper to all this is the dreams. They begin innocuously…but quickly morph into mind-blowing spiritual adventures. The crazy nocturnal activity appears to be related to a soulful character trying to make himself known. In a quest to uncover the truth, Sammi researches clues discovered during her nighttime romps. What she finds is another facet of herself…all wrapped up in post-colonial 18th-century clothes. Sammi flies off to New England, and with the aid of the Reverend Clark, her skeptical father, she embarks on an adventure, revealing a tragic, centuries-old mystery. One only Sammi can solve.

10 Things You Didn't Know About The Resurrection of Hannah:

1) Every main aspect of The Resurrection of Hannah was inspired by true events, using creative license with certain parts and aspects to spin it into a novel, to develop the mystery. Many of the characters are based on important individuals in my life. Like they say, write what you know about!

2) The novel does not fit neatly into any particular genre. I would characterize it mainly as a metaphysical or paranormal mystery, with some humor, suspense, spiritual themes, historical elements and romance thrown in for good measure.

3) The Resurrection of Hannah is based in Florida and Massachusetts, both in present day and two hundred and twenty-five years ago. I lived in both states for many years, and so it was fitting to incorporate my favorite states/towns into my story.

4) One of the central characters is the Reverend Clark, who is based heavily on my father, his personality traits, my relationship with him, and his role as a minister. The spiritual content in my first novel pulls much from my personal experience growing up as a “preacher’s kid”, and my own existential questions about the meaning and purpose of life and death.

5) One of the main underpinnings is the theme of reincarnation and the possibility of other levels of experience and existence. I have been fascinated with these topics since I was a young teenager. Much of this curiosity can also be attributed to working for seven years with terminal/dying patients and their families at a local hospice.

6) One of the central characters, Jonathan, came to me through a series of dreams. Altogether, the dreams happened over a few years, and these experiences were so intense and profound that I devoted a book to this seemingly spiritual type of connection. The first two “dream” experiences documented in my novel are as accurate as possible to what occurred in my real life. Most readers have a lot of questions about these events, as they altered the course of my life, and that of Samantha’s. Sounds crazy, but it really happened, and I will always be eternally grateful that it did.

7) The protagonist, the psychotherapist Samantha Clark, is really me at a younger age. Before I wrote this novel, I had a private practice when I lived in Houston, so I drew on this experience when writing about Samantha being frustrated and bored counseling to a well-heeled population, the “worried well.”

8) I started a metaphysical group that met monthly with about eight friends to delve into subjects we found interesting. Again, most of this is reflected in my novel. I found out a lot about myself researching these areas of interest, and applying them to everyday life.

9) An important character in the trilogy is Samantha’s boyfriend, Todd, who Samantha falls in love with in The Resurrection of Hannah. Todd is based on a young man that I had a “crush” on but never actually had a relationship with as we were both involved with other people, so I figured he would make a great boyfriend for Samantha. That’s what I love about fiction … you can create your own reality!

10) The Resurrection of Hannah is the first in a trilogy of mystery novels called The Samantha Clark Mystery Series. The sequel is The Fear of Things to Come, which was published a few months ago. I am presently writing the last book, which should be published within the next year.

Thanks for sharing these interesting tidbits with us, Kathryne!
