“He’s destroying me—us. I need him like my next breath, yet I’m suffocating.”

An unrequited love that has ripped her to pieces.

Delara has loved Waleron for over a century. Their intense chemistry is sensual, gripping, irresistible. But tragedy struck, and after sixty-one years of believing he was dead, Waleron returns a tortured man. He claims the man she loves is dead, yet the undeniable sexual tension still pulls them together.

“I am no longer the man you love, maitagarri. I am incapable of it.”

Waleron has given his oath to protect the Senses. He will sacrifice everything for them. But there is one Senses he has vowed to protect more than any other—Delara. He will do anything to make certain she is safe, even if it means he must deny her the love they once shared.

She is the hunted.

Delara’s life is in jeopardy and Waleron will do anything to protect her. But he never suspected that Xamien, the man he brings to help protect her is way more important to her than he ever knew.

Torn between two men and hunted by another, Delara must fight her hardest battle—herself.

I am Xamien’s secret lover. Well, in my head I am and since I’m single this is completely allowed. Some of you may ask, who is Xamien, don’t worry you will meet him soon enough, but no falling in love with him. He is all mine.

Writing books is a fantastic way to have adventures that are impossible to have otherwise. I mean do you really want to fall in love with Waleron? He is so unstable and would never pick up after your dogs or clean the litter box. Not to mention the fact that he is always out killing disgusting grave robbing bug people.

Curling up with a good book and losing yourself to another time and place is the greatest reward. Being able to feel a character’s emotions, their fears, pain and love. Now that is incredible. I relish in the books that stay with me long after they have ended. This is what I strive for in my writing. To give the readers, and myself, an escape into another world, my world.

I have been writing since I was twelve. My parents, sorry mom and dad, would send me to my room for an hour every night to do homework, and instead I wrote stories. Oops, guess that is why I did so bad in math.

I have never stopped writing since then and never will. It’s like an addiction, but a good one. I adore stepping into the shoes of a character and deciding their fate. The characters are why I write. I want to fall in love with them (even the bad ones), so that I care about what happens to them in a story. If I can’t care about the characters then why bother with the story.

I live in Toronto with a menagerie of pets that keep me on my toes.

Excerpt:
“Yeah I’ll talk to him,” Xamien said. He picked up his glass, swirled the clear liquid twice and then took a long drawl. Well, it wasn’t like there would be any sex happening here. The movement of the alcohol sent a wave of its scent through the air and she smelled the coolness of straight vodka. Simple and direct, just like him. He told her what he wanted and what he didn’t want. That was exactly how both of them wanted—simple. Sex on occasion and no strings.

Xamien cleared his throat while setting his glass down. “Oh we have lots of strings Kitten. Or would you rather call them chains?”

Her eyes darted to his face and she noticed the twinkle in his eyes. Amusement. He was toying with her and it riled her further. “So are the rumors true?” She offered a smile in return and raised both brows. “Are you really as piss poor in bed as they say you are?”

“Playing with fire, sweetness.”

“Friggin’ Christ, Delara!” Jedrik shouted slapping the heel of his hand on his forehead in utter disbelief.

Keir stood, knocking over his chair in the process. Damien’s shoes crunched across the glass on the floor and he left the room.

Xamien laughed; his deep baritone filling the room, the sound having both Keir and Jedrik stunned. Keir sat again and refilled his glass then sat back looking from one to the other.

“And you’re so asking for it.” “Playful and cute,” Xamien said. “And if you weren’t...” his grin widened and he winked, “...in love with another man I’d suggest you find out for yourself.”

“Don’t bring him into this.” She scrunched her hands into her jeans.

“He’s always in it, Kitten.” He reached for his glass and swallowed the last of the vodka. He strode towards her and she straightened, raised her chin and met his brooding expression head on, despite the emotions running havoc on her body. She was holding her own considering her secret lover was here and speaking telepathically about their interludes while the Talde watched with no idea that something was being said in-between words. But it was dangerous. One of them was going to find out if Xamien didn’t get his ass back to Spain. Alone.

He stopped inches away from her now heaving chest and she felt Jedrik’s hand on her forearm. Xamien eyes were somber with a hint of indecision, as if he was deciding whether to goad her further or not. Refusing to back away, she waited the several seconds before Xamien tilted his head to the side in a nod.

“I can see why he loves you.” Xamien’s expression was thoughtful. “I hope he realizes he does soon before some other man sweeps you into his heart.”

Dumbfounded by his words, Delara’s only reaction was to drop her jaw and stare. Xamien rarely mentioned her love for Waleron. It was one of those things they kept out of their conversations. But he knew about all of it, had lived her memories during mind weaving. Then, when they first hooked up after the Trinity scenario many years ago, well she’d been so hurt that she’d blurted her pain to him. He must have heard it in her thoughts, but she didn’t know he could read her mind yet. They’d never mentioned Waleron since.

Series Promotional Trailer:

Excerpt from Ignite - Mid-Book:
"Kira, come on," she heard the command in his deep voice, but couldn't respond. "Kira, wake up." A hand slapped her in the face, once, twice, a third time and then her eyes shot open and she tried to breathe, but her throat was stuck. Someone flipped her to her side as she began coughing, and finally she spit up what seemed like a gallon of water. Kira laid down again and closed her eyes, wanting to sleep.

"Kira!" She felt one more smack on her face. "You have to stay awake." She opened her eyes and saw the blurry outline of a boy with dark hair and pale skin.

"Tristan?"

"Hello," she saw the corner of his mouth curve upwards despite her uneasy vision.

"What happened?"

"You were being stupid." She started to remember the wave and wipeout, and then her anger brimmed back to the surface.

"Only because you were being an ass," she grumbled and he laughed.

"Come on, try to sit up." Tristan curved an arm around her back to help lift her up. She noticed, at that moment, that they both wore only bathing suits and she was basically sitting on his lap. Kira tried to discreetly look at his chest, which was quite chiseled, and then she noticed the nice bulge of a bicep in his arm. Kira let her eyes wander a few moments longer until Tristan picked her up far enough for the pain in her head to finally hit. She groaned, put a hand to her head and curled into his body a little more.

"Ow."

"Yeah, your board got you pretty bad."

"I know." Kira was starting to get annoyed by his habit of stating the obvious. She pulled her hand back for a moment. "Crap! I’m bleeding." He stared at her hand, which was covered in running red liquid, until she put it back to her head. Kira noticed he was staring again, but this time at her wound. She felt him lean in closer, inspecting it she hoped. After a minute, she couldn’t take it.

"Tristan, tell it to me straight. How bad is it?" She felt him jerk as if she had interrupted him mid-thought.

Simmer is the second book in the thrilling Midnight Fire Series. It is approximately 65,000 words.

Series Promotional Trailer:

Excerpt from Ignite - First Chapter:
Finally, she looked at the guy Luke had called Tristan. He seemed different to her somehow, with jet-black hair that hung over his eyes a little, and barely visible dimples that played on his cheeks. His eyes were also an icy blue, but they seemed deeper to her, like steep ravines she could fall into. He stayed out of the conversation, she noticed, as if lost in his own thoughts—ones that seemed more troublesome than the cutting remarks being doled out by his friends. He had a rebel without a cause look that made him perilous for a girl’s heart.

Suddenly, he turned to Kira and his eyes seemed to brighten a shade when they landed on hers. He stared, and Kira, who was never one to back down, returned his look with interest.
"Who are you?" He asked in a barely audible voice filled with surprise, one just loud enough to attract the attention of his friends and Luke. Kira melted at the sound. He was dangerous she knew, but something about him made her feel safe and afraid at the same time.

"Kira," was all she could respond with. They both looked at each other, trying to unlock the other’s secrets.
His friends came to circle her now and she felt cornered. Fear sparked in her heart, like a quick flash of lightning. She didn’t quite understand it, but she also couldn’t shake it.
"Well, what have we here?" Diana leaned in to really look at her and Kira thought she could read shock on the girl’s face, despite the confidence in her voice. Tristan laid a hand on Diana’s arm, almost like a warning, Kira thought.
"Diana, back off," Luke said and tried to come to Kira’s rescue, but it was Mr. Bell who saved her by running into the classroom very late and very out of breath.

 Series Promotional Trailer:

Excerpt from Ignite - Prologue:
Kira watched as he languidly stood up, flexing his muscles as though he had just awakened from a long dream. He stretched his arms over his head and cracked the bones in his neck before finally settling his gaze on her. She hardly recognized him, the boy she had fallen in love with. Where minutes before there had been light and emotion in his eyes, there was only a black hole, a seemingly endless abyss. Kira had never seen him look at her that way, like less than food, like vermin, even since the first time they had met.

"Aren’t you going to run?" He asked with sinister humor coloring his words. The smirk on his face may as well have been a knife cutting through her heart. The darkness had always called him, but Kira had always thought that being with her would be enough to keep him from crossing over. She saw now that he had surrendered to his nature and for the first time she felt real fear when he looked at her.

Kira stepped backwards on shaky feet, trying to digest the question. She didn’t have an answer. How could she turn her back on him and run away? The man she loved was trying to kill her. There were no options. Could she forget it all—all the nights they had shared kissing and swapping secrets—and fight to kill? Or, would she run and admit that there was no hope that he would return to her?

Kira said his name and reached out her hand, searching one last time for the man she had lost.

"Yes, honey." The word hit her like a slap in the face as it rolled off of his tongue drenched in sarcasm.

Kira looked up at the sun, still hidden behind the shadow of the moon, and sprinted into the tree line behind her. She couldn’t give up on him now. But, when the eclipse was over, maybe she would finally find the strength to fight.

Feature Week: Midnight Fire Series by Kaitlyn Davis - Interview and Giveaway

I'm very excited to be bringing you a week of posts about the Midnight Fire series by Kaitlyn Davis. First up, an interview with Kaitlyn!

Hi Kaitlyn! Welcome to Phantasmic Reads :)

So...Buffy is a big influence for you?

YES! Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favorite TV show of all time. Obviously, Buffy is a kick-butt heroine, but there is so much more to that show--forbidden love, deep friendships, world-ending action, laugh-out-loud jokes. Buffy taught me that you can laugh and save the world at the same time--that genre lines were made to be blurred.

Do you love Angel as much?
Hm...tough call! I think as a TV show, something was lacking--they took too much of the humor away (I need me some Xander!). But as a character, Angel is fantastic! And he was the first Hollywood crush that I remember having :)

Any other favorite shows and/or movies?
I love the 90s! Dawson’s Creek and Friends round out my top three favorite television shows of all time! Add in some Sex in the City, The Vampire Diaries, Game of Thrones, and Homeland, and I am good to go!

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?
Anywhere and everywhere! Starbucks and my couch are probably the top two, but I also frequent the library, parks, and occasionally my desk :) Normally, I like to write in the afternoon, but if I’m on a roll I’ll keep going until I fall asleep mid-sentence!

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
This is totally bizarre, but I wrote every chapter of the Midnight Fire Series to be just about seven pages single-spaced! It started as a way to make sure I was using enough vivid detail, but then it just became normal. I don’t think I’ll repeat that technique ever again, but for these books it worked!

What are your pet peeves?
Really quiet, repetitive noises! Leaky faucets may be my downfall...

What's your guilty pleasure?
Reality television! It is not uncommon for me to marathon-binge on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or The Voice.

Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
I love photography! I actually designed the covers myself :) I also semi-play the Ukulele, but I want to take lessons to improve a bit.

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?
EBooks! I love traveling with an entire library on my person at all times! But if it is a book I love, one I know I’ll read a dozen times, I’ll splurge and buy it as a hardcover.

What are you currently reading, or what did you recently finish?
The Clockwork Princess ! I can’t wait to find out what happens between Tessa, Will and Jem--I am SO Team Will!

Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point?
No point... unless my mother is coming for a visit!

Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
A little bit of both! There are no scenes or characters completely based on real life events/people, but I’ll steal some character traits here and some sayings there.

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?
So tough! I definitely fell in love with my two leading men, but I have to say my main character Kira has got to be my favorite! She is thrown so many curve balls and her life is turned completely upside down, but she manages to keep it together and persevere. I love a girl who can kick some ass and doesn’t let the boys fight her battles!

How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?
Ooh, that one makes an appearance in the later books so I don’t want to give anything away. But you’ll probably know when you read it!

What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
Definitely not as much time as I would like, but I do squeeze it in whenever I can! Some of my favorite authors are JK Rowling, Cassie Clare, Richelle Mead, Robert Jordan, Tamora Pierce, Lynne Ewing and more!

If a fairy godmother told you could be put into the world of your favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
I want to go to Hogwarts!! I want a wand to choose me, I want to play Quidditch, I want to step on platform 9 ¾, I want my own owl and I want magic! :) Obviously, that would be Harry Potter!

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Tolkien to learn the intricacies of world building, Cassie Clare to learn how to break my readers’ hearts (and put them back together again!), and Shakespeare because damn he had a way with words.

Do you ever write in your PJ’s?
As often as possible...

Do you have any pets?
I WANT A DOG!!! Sorry, huge puppy lover! I can’t wait until I can afford one!

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
Write the story that speaks to you--the one that latches on and consumes your thoughts until putting it on paper is only way to stop thinking about it!

Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
Thank you!!

Have you ever gone out in public with your shirt on backwards, or your slippers on, and when realizing it, just said screw it?
Oh yes! Proudly :)

Speed Round:

The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less:
Heart-pumping action. Heart-stopping romance. Characters you’ll fall in love with. Scenes to keep you reading until dawn.#MidnightFireSeries

Pen or pencil?
Fine-point sharpie!
Milk, white, or dark chocolate?
Milk... yum...
Dogs or cats?
DOGS!
Pie or cake?
Cake :)
Plotter or pantser?
Total plotter.
Coffee or tea?
Coffee... lots and lots of coffee...
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Flying!

Thanks for letting us get to know more about you, Kaitlyn!
